Fertilization
DO NOT put fertilizer or manure in the hole when you plant the tree. This will burn the root system and stunt your first year’s growth. Wait a few weeks after you plant the tree to apply 1/4 cup 10-10-10 fertilizer. Sprinkle the fertilizer on the top of the ground, in a circle around the tree. The radius of the circle should be about 1 1/2 to 2 feet from the trunk. Work it lightly into the surface of the soil. This will prevent fertilizer run off and enable the fertilizer to release gradually into the root system. Alternatively, you can also use a time release fertilizer, but be sure to work this lightly in as well.
